Prof. Devin Grammon advises City of Eugene on inclusive bilingual signage

On May 12th at the Eugene Public Library, Assistant Professor Devin Grammon and students from his Linguistic Landscapes seminar presented their research findings to Eugene city officials regarding the use of Spanish on public signs in downtown Eugene and what this tells us about ethnolinguistic vitality and the inclusion/exclusion of the local Spanish-speaking community in this particular area. Students in this course learn about sociolinguistic diversity in public spaces by conducting a collaborative, applied sociolinguistics project that involves fieldwork, data interpretation, and proposing recommendations to inform local policies and planning.

Grammon’s virtual presentation was attended by over 60 participants including Eugene Mayor Lucy Vinis and was covered by local NPR affiliate KLCC
