Graduate Studies
The Department of Romance Languages offers programs
of study leading to the degree of Master of Arts (M.A.)
in French, in Italian, in Spanish, or in Romance Languages
and to the degree of doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in
Romance Languages.
Application Procedures
An applicant for admission to the Master of Arts (M.A.)
should normally have completed an undergraduate major
in a Romance Language and Literature or the equivalent
thereof (licence, laurea, licenciatura, etc.).
Students with a degree in another discipline may apply,
provided they have a good knowledge of at least one
Romance language and are familiar with one Romance literature.
An applicant for admission to the Ph.D. should have
completed a Master of Arts degree in a Romance Language
and Literature or the equivalent thereof. Students should
have, at least, a reading knowledge of a second Romance
language upon entering the Ph.D. program.
The Department offers Graduate Teaching Fellowships:
Graduate Teaching Fellows receive a minimum annual stipend
(9 months) of approximately $10,000, depending on the
candidates academic status. Principal tuition charges
are waived. A Graduate Teaching fellow is responsible
for teaching one beginning language section four or
five hours per week under the direction of a faculty
supervisor.

Fellowship Award. (GTF)

Three letters of recommendation from
professors with whom you have worked and which make
direct reference to your aptitude for graduate courses
in literature and your language competence. One
letter may refer to your potential teaching ability.

The statement of purpose. This statement should be
about 750 words long and describe your academic experience
to date, your reasons for wanting to do graduate work
in literature in the Romance Languages Department at
the Universtiy of Oregon, and your eventual career goals.
Students applying directly to the Ph.D. program must
also specify their research interests.
Official transcripts of college-level work. Official
transcripts from foreign colleges must be accompanied
by an official translation of work completed for a degree.
All transcripts should state the name of the degree
obtained. International students can check for degree
credentials with the
Graduate School.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (verbal, quantitative,
& analytical) for all native English speakers. GRE scores
are only for native speakers of English.
TOEFL scores for international students to demonstrate
English proficiency. A TOEFL exam is required of all
international students. The University will not admit
international students without TOEFL results (see possible
exceptions at the Graduate School link provided below).
You should register for the exam as early as possible
since scores take six weeks or more to arrive. You must
score at least 500 (paper-based) or 173 (computer-based)
to be considered for admission. To read more on the

Students applying directly to the Ph.D. program must
submit a substantial writing sample (an M.A. thesis,
a graduate seminar paper, or an undergraduate research
paper on a relevant topic)
International students must complete a supplementary
financial statement listing sources of support (you
may list your projected graduate teaching stipend if
you are applying for one, but generally at least $800
additional support is required from another source).
The
Financial Statement should be accompanied by a financial/bank
statement showing the $800 in additional funds.
International Students
All necessary application requirements must be met
before the I-20, Student VISA process for your entry
to the U.S. can be initiated.
Due to recent changes in VISA
processing, international students are encouraged to
complete their applications as soon as possible. The
VISA process now includes coordination of two government
agencies as well as the University of Oregon. The University
has no time-line for the completion of the process.
New students are normally offered admission
to the program beginning in the Fall Term.
Priority will be given to applicants
whose files are complete by February 1.
