When should I declare a major?

You can declare a major at any point in your undergraduate career.  Note that declared majors/minors receive priority for registering for certain classes and are eligible to apply for departmental scholarships.

How do I change a minor to a major?

If you are already a declared minor in Romance Languages, you can simply complete a form in the main office.  Your faculty advisor will not change; you should consult your advisor about the effect of the change on your academic program/planning.

How do I drop a major/minor?

Fill out a drop form in the Romance Languages main office and leave it with the Undergraduate Secretary.

When does a French, Spanish, Italian, or Romance Languages course not count for the major or minor?

  • When it is taken P/N.
  • When the final grade is below C-.
  • When it is conducted in English.
  • When it is a 100- or 200-level course.

Who can answer general questions about study abroad programs?

The Office of International Affairs (IA), in Oregon Hall. http://studyabroad.uoregon.edu/

Who can help me determine how overseas credits fit into my major or minor?

            Your major/minor advisor.

I've heard that there are language-related internships abroad.  Whom do I talk to about these?

I've heard that there are language-related internships in Lane County.  Whom do I talk to about these?

How can I get credit for independent study while overseas?

As with any independent study, you need to establish a specific agreement with an individual faculty member.  This must be done before you leave Eugene.  A formal, signed agreement is necessary. Please note that independent study credits do not count for the major or minor.

Who is my advisor?

If you are a declared major or minor, ask the Undergraduate Secretary to look up your advisor.

What should I bring when I visit my advisor?

Bring a copy of the major/minor requirements (available on line or in the RL office) and a list of courses you have taken.

What if my advisor is on leave?

Stop by the RL Advising office in Friendly 213 and ask to be reassigned.  You will receive an e-mail with the name of your new advisor.

Where can I take a placement test?/How do I figure out my level?

Testing office:  238 Student Health Center  http://testing.uoregon.edu/

If you have any doubts about your test result, one of the language supervisors can help you identify your skill level.

            Italian

The classes I need are full.  What do I do?

1. Before term begins: keep checking back on the Class Schedule to try to register when  someone drops.

2. Contact the instructor to inquire about a waiting list.

3. Once term begins: attend the class(es) you need for the first two class meetings. There is always movement in the first week, and since registration is by instructor permission only once term begins, your presence in class gives you a greater likelihood of taking the place of someone who drops or never shows up.

4. Consider summer study either in Eugene or through an overseas study program.  Costs can be comparable, and up to 12 credits can be earned.

Do linguistics courses taught in Spanish count for the in-residence requirement?

Yes. Span 420 can be used to fulfill the requirement for two courses, 407 or higher, taken on the Eugene campus.

Do French or Spanish for Reading Knowledge classes (RL 410) fulfill major or minor requirements?

No. French or Spanish for Reading Knowledge classes are designed primarily for graduate students in other departments needing to fulfill a language requirement or develop a basic reading knowledge of the language for research purposes. It is not an in-depth "reading skills" course, and it does not count toward either the major or the minor in Spanish or French.

How do I get certified to serve as a tutor (for Academic Learning Services or the Athletic Department)?

If you have taken language classes at the UO, speak to your most recent instructor.  Otherwise, see one of the head undergraduate advisors.

I need a director for an Honors College thesis.  Whom do I talk to?

Start with professors with whom you've taken courses related to your thesis topic.

What if my Degree Audit Report (DARS) says I lack a requirement I think I already completed?

The Degree Audit Report is an advising tool only; the departmental advisor overrules DARS (on issues relating to the major and minor). If you have questions about your major requirements degree audit, visit your advisor during office hours.
