The department administers several scholarships for undergraduate as well as graduate students of French, Italian and Spanish languages. Applications are available during the first week of winter term, and will be awarded for the following academic year sometime in spring term. The following are examples of scholarships available, subject to change each year based on available funding:

Françoise Calin Scholarship
     Limited to juniors, seniors, and graduate students who are majors or minors in the Romance Languages department, with consideration given to those with preparation in French.

Emmanuel Hatzantonis Scholarship
     Scholarship to carry out Italian studies in Italy with the University's foreign studies program. Limited to majors or minors in the Romance Languages department, with consideration given those with preparation in Italian.

Helen Fe Jones Scholarship
     Scholarship to study Spanish in a Spanish speaking country for undergraduate and graduate students) Limited to juniors, seniors and graduate students who are majors or minors in the Romance Languages department, with consideration given those with preparation in Spanish.

Perry J. Powers Scholarship
     Scholarship for the study in the Romance Languages department. Limited to undergraduate majors and minors in the Romance Languages department.

Perugia Summer Program Scholarship
     Usually two scholarships of 850,000 lire each (approximately $500) for study on the Summer Program to be received in Perugia. Students applying to the Perugia Program may use the same two letters, both for application to the program and for application for the scholarships. They must, however, submit a separate statement of purpose in applying for the scholarship.

Stickels Scholarship
     Scholarship to study in a Spanish speaking country. Limited to graduate students of Romance Languages with a concentration in Spanish expressing an intention to become language teachers. In the absence of graduate student applicants, undergraduates intending to become language teachers will be considered.

James T. Wetzel Scholarship
     Scholarship limited to graduate students in Romance Languages to support a specific research project.


     Students who make satisfactory progress toward the M.A. degree typically receive two years of support in the form of graduate teaching fellowships (GTFs) and tuition waivers. Students who make satisfactory progress toward the Ph.D. typically are eligible for three years of support in the form of graduate teaching fellowships and tuition waivers if they enter the program after earning the M.A.

     The department has a well-endowed fund it uses to supplement the basic GTF stipend. Besides competitive grants from the Graduate School, the Center for the Study of Women in Society, and the Oregon Humanities Center, graduates may apply for a variety of departmental awards and scholarships. These include awards for travel to conferences and research trips as well as fellowships for Ph.D. candidates who are writing their dissertations.


The COFLT ELIZABETH BARICEVIC/JOSEFINA BOTTA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS recognize

outstanding commitment to the study of a second language. The Confederation in Oregon for Language Teaching (COFLT) awards four (4) scholarships of $500 each under this program: one for a student at a high school with 500 students or less, two for students at high schools of any size, and one for a student at the college/university level.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
1. Applicants must attend an Oregon secondary school or a post-secondary institution.
2. High school applicants must have completed or be currently enrolled in the 3rd year of language study.
3. High school applicants must rank in the upper one third of the senior class.
4. Applicants must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 in the second language.
5. College/university applicants must be currently enrolled, at least, in the 2nd year of language study. Children of members of the selection committee are not eligible for these scholarships.
APPLICANTS: Five complete copies of the application packet must be submitted. This packet includes:
1) completed application page (reverse of this letter);
2) a 300 word personal statement by the applicant explaining: a) purpose of application, b) why the study of second languages is important to the applicant and to the country, c) an elaboration of the applicants
second language involvement outside of the classroom;
3) two letters of recommendation: a) applicants second language instructor, who must be a current COFLT member, and b) an individual who is familiar with the applicants involvement with a second language outside the classroom;
4) an unofficial copy of applicants transcript.
TO RECOMMENDING TEACHER: The named candidate for a COFLT Elizabeth Barecevic/ Josefina Botta Memorial Scholarship has chosen you as a reference who knows his/her second language ability well. In
your recommendation, please address the following questions:
1) How long have you known the student? What courses have you taught this student?
2) Please tell us about this students ability, motivation, imagination, and dedication to second language study. To what extent has this candidate made use of his/her academic potential?
3) Give your impressions of the students integrity, aims, and values. How is the student regarded by peers and adults? Include any additional information which might assist the selection committee in its task.

SELECTION PROCESS: Financial need is not a consideration for this scholarship. Applications will be rated according to the following categories: a) Second language GPA [5 pts]; b) Letters of Recommendation
