The Department of Romance Languages is a diverse, multicultural, and plurilingual academic unit that instructs and researches in French, Italian, and Spanish languages and cultures. It is one of the largest language, literature and culture departments at the University of Oregon, as well as in the American Northwest.
The Department is composed of a first-rate group of professors of different national origins, and a body of committed and talented students pursuing minors, majors, M.A.s, and Ph.D.s in the three languages. As well as academic programs, the RL Department sponsors and supports numerous activities such as lectures, film festivals, study abroad programs, international conferences, and community events.
The mission of the Department is to provide students with an extensive knowledge of the languages and cultures that we teach, as well as to foster their intellectual growth. It also promotes understanding and appreciation for French, Italian, and Spanish communities.
