Three letters of recommendation from professors with whom you have worked and which make direct reference to your aptitude for graduate courses in literature and your language competence. One letter may refer to your potential teaching ability.

  • The statement of purpose. This statement should be about 750 words long and describe your academic experience to date, your reasons for wanting to do graduate work in literature in the Romance Languages Department at the Universtiy of Oregon, and your eventual career goals. Students applying directly to the Ph.D. program must also specify their research interests.

  • Official transcripts of college-level work. Official transcripts from foreign colleges must be accompanied by an official translation of work completed for a degree. All transcripts should state the name of the degree obtained. International students can check for degree credentials with the Graduate School.

  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (verbal, quantitative, & analytical) for all native English speakers. GRE scores are only for native speakers of English.

  • TOEFL scores for international students to demonstrate English proficiency. A TOEFL exam is required of all international students. The University will not admit international students without TOEFL results (see possible exceptions at the Graduate School link provided below). You should register for the exam as early as possible since scores take six weeks or more to arrive. You must score at least 500 (paper-based) or 173 (computer-based) to be considered for admission. To read more on the TOEFL see the Graduate School.

  • Students applying directly to the Ph.D. program must submit a substantial writing sample (an M.A. thesis, a graduate seminar paper, or an undergraduate research paper on a relevant topic)

  • International students must complete a supplementary financial statement listing sources of support (you may list your projected graduate teaching stipend if you are applying for one, but generally at least $800 additional support is required from another source). The Financial Statement should be accompanied by a financial/bank statement showing the $800 in additional funds.

    International Students

All necessary application requirements must be met before the I-20, Student VISA process for your entry to the U.S. can be initiated.

Due to recent changes in VISA processing, international students are encouraged to complete their applications as soon as possible. The VISA process now includes coordination of two government agencies as well as the University of Oregon. The University has no time-line for the completion of the process.

New students are normally offered admission to the program beginning in the Fall Term.

Priority will be given to applicants whose files are complete by February 1.
